Description
"Red Dragon"
A great red dragon with massive wings perches a top a rocky outcropping. Black smoke drifts from it the nostrils of its horny head as it gazes far and wide over the land. Clouds fill the skies overhead and snow capped mountains like the horizon. Dry yellow grass grows upon the hill where the dragon has landed.
Dragons can come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. However, in many role playing games, the red dragon is one of the worst sorts. They breath fire and are the largest of the evil wyrms (western style dragons). This probably originates with the great red dragon Smaug from Tolkien's "The Hobbit".
Drawing dragons was pretty much how I got my start in art, and, though I tend towards depicting real animals in my artworks these days, I still like to make the occassional high fantasy art.
About how I create my artwork:
Rather than traditional forms of art such as painting or photography, I use a computer to create my images. It's called 3D Rendering and works like so: I make a scene by sculpting and arranging digital models in a virtual 3D space. After stipulating lighting and atmospheric effects, I have the computer create a simulated environment from which I take a virtual snap shot of the scene. Then, using image editing software and something more akin to traditional painting techniques (via a Wacom tablet), I go over the work adjusting colors, adding brushwork, painting in details, etc. to produce the final image. Software I use includes: Sculptris, ZBrush, Blender3d, Vue, Daz Studio, and GIMP.
